Last night, I witnessed an atmosphere during the Baker County-Bradford County football game that few high school football games can match. From the moment I pulled into Baker County Memorial Stadium, a line of fans stretched halfway around the stadium nearly an hour before kickoff. More than 5,000 people packed the stadium, with fans even crowding around gaps in the stadium fences just to catch a glimpse of the game. The sounds of the crowd, marching band and chants from both sides filled the stadium well before kickoff.
The intensity was high on and off the field, and during warmups, that intensity spilled onto the field before the game had even started. Players from both teams began moving toward one another before coaches and staff stepped in to separate them. Baker County head coach Jamie Rodgers added another layer to an already heated rivalry. After previously coaching at Bradford County, Rodgers found himself on the opposite sideline Friday night, leading the Wildcats against his former program.
The history between these two schools runs deep, with a long and fiery competitive edge. Multiple fights have broken out over the years between the two schools, to the point that both sheriffs’ departments are present to help keep the peace. Fans from both schools traded chants and taunts throughout the night, adding another layer to a rivalry that clearly means more than just what happens on the scoreboard.
From kickoff, Baker-Bradford was the place to be on Friday night. The first quarter went back and forth, with both defenses standing firm before Bradford finally broke through with a touchdown to take a 6-0 lead. A rushing touchdown in the second quarter extended the Tornados’ lead to 13-0 after Baker blocked the PAT. The Wildcats answered with a score of their own, cutting the deficit to 13-6 heading into halftime.
An early third-quarter field goal by Baker brought the Wildcats within four points at 13-9. Bradford responded with a fourth-quarter field goal to extend its lead to 16-9, which would be the final score and give the Tornados a much-needed rivalry win to start the season..
Both teams will look to build on Friday night’s rivalry matchup. Baker County will look to bounce back against the 0-2 Baldwin Indians on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while Bradford County will host the 0-2 Zarephath Academy Eagles looking to extend its winning streak.
With two strong defenses, dynamic offenses and a rivalry that runs deep, Friday night gave fans a glimpse of what could be in store for both teams. If this game was any indication, Baker County and Bradford County are two teams worth keeping an eye on as the season moves forward.
